#TyneeTalks: Every Black Woman Should Attend Essence Festival

#TyneeTalks: Every Black Woman Should Attend Essence Festival

The world renowned Essence Festival took place this past Fourth of July weekend (June 29th-July2nd) in Nawlins (New Orleans). This spectacular festival, hosted by Essence Magazine, the magazine for “Today’s Black Woman”, has been taking place for the past 23 years, and I’m just trying to figure out why it took me so long to attend this oasis of Melanin Magic! I got my whole life together while walking through the hot, humid streets of New Orleans. From the time I stepped off the plane, I was immediately welcomed, and everybody and they Mama knew that I was there for the festival that brings thousands of beautiful Black women from across the globe to fellowship with one another.  I felt a kindred spirit in the Big Easy; I felt at home. My relationship with NOLA dates back to my Freshmen year of college when I attended the prestigious HBCU, Dillard University, located in the 7th Ward. However, back then I didn’t get a chance to attend the Essence Fest and I’m low-key mad about it.

It is important that I stress that every Black woman should attend Essence Fest before she dies! Essence is unapologetically BLACK, and for that I am grateful. The 3-day festival is jam packed with everything Black girls love: live music, make-up booths, free haircare products catered to “our” hair, celebrities, fine BLACK
MEN, food, inspirational seminars, church, and gospel music. The fest literally caters to today’s Black woman, both young and old. There is something for everyone, ranging from the Disney booth that brought the magic of Disney World to middle of the convention center, to the Ford sponsored block party that bridged the gap of all generations. Not to mention all the free gift bags and free hair care product samples that are going to last for the next six months.

If the free products and gift bags aren’t enough to motivate you to bring you to the bottom of the boot, let me put emphasis on the sisterhood and bonds you form while there. It’s not rare to see Black women hugging each other, complimenting one another, asking for fashion and hair tips, and just genuinely celebrating each other at Essence. Oh, and I must reiterate, the men! They are just absolutely heavenly. I mean there’s so much more, I can say, but I’ll leave you on this note: START PLANNING YOUR TRIP TO NOLA FOR ESSENCE FEST 2018 NOW!!! You will not be disappointed!

Tynee Talks: The latest 411 on Mary J. Blige: She’s hurting Ya’ll!

Tynee Talks: The latest 411 on Mary J. Blige: She’s hurting Ya’ll!

I’m damn near in tears writing this, because when Mary hurts, we all collectively hurt. The Queen, Mary J. Blige, came into my life when I was seven years old. It was the summer of 1992, and my older sister was able to secure her debut album on cassette tape. We pumped that joint all summer long and well into the fall of that year. We sang our hearts out every day B! We was reminiscing on love we didn’t have and searching for a REAL LOVE. Mary had us hooked and we’d continue to rock with Mary throughout her trials and tribulations well into our adulthood.

In most recent years, we all thought Mary J, had finally found her REAL LOVE, with a man named Kendu Issacs. But recent events have determined: THAT WAS A LIE! Come to find out, the turtle face a** ninja was doing Mary dirty. In every photo op Mary was smiling from ear to ear. We thought Mary was truly happy because, no longer were her songs riddled in pain. Some would argue that when Mary is happy her songs and albums are not that great. And as you all know, when Mary is pleading for love and plagued with heartache, it only means one thing: HER ALBUM WILL BE FIRE!

But, today as I sat glued to my screen, watching Mary’s Breakfast Club interview about her upcoming album and impending divorce, I was grief stricken by her saddened demeanor and strained smiles. During that interview Mary looked like the personification of all of her songs. She looked like she was a lover and secretary for eleven years. She looked like she was going down ya’ll. She looked like if we looked into her life and seen what she’s seen, we couldn’t handle it, not even for a minute. She looked like she was sitting here, wondering why he didn’t love her! But, Mary said to herself, I’m not gon cry, I’m not gon she no tears, and handled herself like the resilient woman she is.

Mary is hurting ya’ll and all I want to do is wrap my arms around her while we binge watch Netflix and eat junk food. I want to make Mary laugh from deep down in her soul. I know that due to these unfortunate circumstances, our ears will be blessed, but I hate that it had to come at the expense of her broken heart, yet again.

Tynee Talks: SXSW: 5 reasons why you should attend!

Tynee Talks: SXSW: 5 reasons why you should attend!

South by Southwest (SXSW) is a conglomerate of film, media, and music festivals and conferences. If you’re a lover of entertainment, weirdness, music, and a whole bunch of people living on the edge of tomorrow, then South By is the place to be. It’s a place where dreams turn into reality. I had my first SXSW experience in 2012 with my crew, rapper/producer Jon Connor & All Varsity Entertainment, LLC (AV Squad). Our goal was to make a big splash in the music industry, leave our mark at SXSW, and get our unsigned artist, Jon Connor signed to a major label.**  We accomplished all goals! I told ya’ll SXSW is a place where dreams turn into reality.
That's me with  Jon Connor and the Squad

5 years after I trudged through the streets of Downtown Austin, chanting down 6th Street yelling: “South By Squad West” and “BLUE CITY CLUB: YOU KNOW! “in army fatigues, Jon Connor t-shirts, combat boots, picket signs, and free cd’s; I returned. I returned to the place that has launched a thousand careers; this time, not as a soldier, but as a civilian and it was exhilarating.
Me as a Civilian

So relax and take note and understand why you should come to SXSW before you die!

Get yo’ music heard
If you’re an aspiring artist, SXSW is a place to get your music heard by people from all over the world. It’s basically like the personification of putting your music on an internet site. The difference is, you get to touch, feel, and see the people you’re giving your art to. Plus they don’t troll your shit, like they do on the internet. I mean they may throw your cd down after they get 10 steps away from you, but hey that’s the thrill of it all.
Love & Hip Hop New York's own DJ Drewski from Hot 97

FREE MUSIC
If you’re a consumer of music, then you definitely need to go to SXSW. You get tons of free music, ranging from: free music performances at dope venues, free CD’s (for the old fashioned music listener like myself), and random street performances. Your ears get a chance to vibe off the next new hot artist before they blow and you get to be the one to say: I been up on (Insert Artist Here)
Next to Blow: GoGettas @GoGettasMusic

SUPPORT
The folks in your own city may not fuck with your movement or your music, but everyone is so supportive at South By.  I mean, you could be at a spot where there’s 20 acts performing and 15 of those people suck, but they’d never know because everyone is mad supportive. Artists are giving other artists mad props and support. Everyone gets a round of applause. That support is what you need in the cut throat music world. The overwhelming support you receive at SXSW is the glimmer of hope you need to keep pursuing your dreams. The shits amazing!

Dope Ass People
In your everyday life, you’re probably used to personal space and normality.  You can forget about that shit at SXSW. There’s so many people!!! You’re only millimeters away from somebody at all times, but you don’t care because the energy and vibes are so crazy.  You come across weed sellers with marijuana wigs, half naked men and women, dream readers, dream seekers, and some indescribable peeps every 5 steps. But it’s all good, because people you’ve never met in your life, instantly turn into your best friends! Music is the great connector and SXSW proves it.

HEAVY PROMO
You can promote yourself, however you see fit! Business cards, t-shirts, picket signs, Snapchat filters, posters, caravans, huge amplifiers blasting your music, semi-trucks, you name it, it was there! If you leave with nothing else, you at least learn how to brand and market yourself in a variety of ways.
These guys came heavy with the PROMO

I could probably write a whole dissertation on why you should attend SXSW before you die, but ain’t nobody got time for that!
Just be sure to make your way to Austin City Limits the second week in March and I promise you it’ll change your life!

The ONLY LEMONADE WE ACKNOWLEDGE IS GUCCI!

Free at last, free at last, thank God Almighty Gucci free at last! Ya’ll can throw away ya’ll Hashtag

Let’s be clear I’m not a bandwagon Gucci fan, neither am I a die-hard Gucci fan, but I do loves me some Gucci Mane and the endless Trap music he has blessed us with. Everybody knows I luh (LOVE) God and Trap music. That’s law and that’s fact!

Gucci Mane is like everybody’s favorite hood cousin, that happens to be the coolest cousin, but also happens to be yo hustling/trappin’ cousin that you love so much. You know the cousin that always brings both dark and light liquor, plus some herbal medicinals. He’s basically your cousin that’s always “lookin out” in Hood Terms. He’s the cousin that Grandma stays pleadin’ the blood of Jesus over. The cousin that she puts blessing oil on, unbeknownst to him. It is because of her prayers that he got prison time instead of being six feet under. Due to her diligent prayers, he is now currently free. Shout out to Grandma!

Gucci Mane has had several run-ins with the law. He has been in custody since 2013. He was scheduled to be released on September 20, 2016 (my babydaddy birthday), but the Lord saw fit that our Trap Homie/favorite cousin be released on May, 26, 2016, just in time for Memorial Day weekend. All strippers can REJOICE! I’m sure Gucci has a straight out of prison Trap Anthem on deck we can all twerk to. In case you didn’t know Gucci has been droppin’ mixtapes from prison the whole time. Which brings me to my next point. Is Gucci working with Luscious and Cookie Lyon? Inquiring minds want to know!

Teyana Taylor: A tale of Love, Heartache, and the Ultimate Snapback

Teyana Taylor: A tale of Love, Heartache, and the Ultimate Snapback...

Last night Teyana Taylor was serving mad body and vocal goals out here in these Dallas streets. Ms. Teyanna gave a hell of a show at the infamous Dallas House of Blues, where she performed her entire album, entitled VII (7) Unplugged.  TT, did not come to play with the children. My little sister in my head definitely proved that she was no longer the tom-boyish young lady we were introduced to on MTV’s Sweet 16, but she is a full grown woman that has been through some thangs, i.e.: Public break-up, fake ass friends, new love, new baby and new engagement, all within a span of 3 years. She had the fellas dreaming of sleeping with and R&B chick and the ladies coveting to be as just as bad-ass and sexy as she is.

The Show:
Teyana showed up and showed out. Her slim-thick, cute self was working that stage and was swinging that good Malaysian hair for dear life. Can we say: Inches! Baby girl’s body was bangin and so were her back-up dancers. TT’s choreography perfectly matched every song. Every song had a story behind it, and Teyana’s charismatic personality illuminated the entire venue as she connected with the audience as if we were her homies from around the way.  The tailor made costuming fit Ms. Taylor like a glove and she let us all know that her SNAPBACK from baby JUNIE was REAL! Teyana is definitely bringing back that good R&B music that seems to have been left in the 90s. She bringing back feel good music that made you unafraid to fall in love.

The Message:
This raw unapologetic album was the soundtrack to my love life for nearly a year. It made me laugh, cry, ponder, and it also healed me. It made me believe in love again. VII resonated so deeply with me because every girl can relate to her heart being on life support because of a nigga that could give two flying fucks about her feelings. But it also gives hope that you, yes girl, you! You are more than enough. The lyrics to Sorry say: I’m sorry you didn’t make me happy and I’m sorry you never learned how, I’m sorry it had to be this way, but my heart is so good now.” Teyana let us know, that we can have our power back and it’s not our fought that the relationship didn’t work; that nigga just never learned how to love you. In the middle of the show, Teyana had a very intimate moment with the crowd, and it seemed as though lil sis was speaking directly to me when she stated: “Don’t become the person that hurt you.” The beauty in the simplicity of her words, was like a sweet symphony to my ears, because often times we as women forget this gem of advice and become lost in our hurt and in turn become the predator that hurt us. However, true love, real love, you know the love that's tailor made for you, can and will heal all past wounds and then you too can put one in the air for love.

P.S. Teyanna is my new sister cause I told her Daddy she’s my little sister and I’m his new daughter.
